Abstract: Jiamuhe Formation which in Mahu Sag and its periphery is one of important and real natural gas exploration formations in Junggar Basin. The study of stratigraphic division and correlation of Jiamuhe Formation is of guiding signifi cance to the selection of exploration zones and plays in this area. In previous studies, the correlation method and succeeding natural gas exploration target of Jiamuhe Formation are not clear. In order to establish the method of stratigraphic division and correlation of Jiamuhe Formation and judge the natural gas exploration target. The paper make a synthetical contrast of rock between outcrop, downhole and seismic data, combining with regional natural gas geochemical data. The study shows that, wherever the Jiamuhe Formation in, it is a Permian strata, the upper part of it is clastic, the lower part of it is volcanic .The strata thin from northern Mahu Sag towards Zhongguai Swell. Based on new method of division and correlation, part of drilling section which once belong to Jiamuhe Formation is removed and belong to Upper Carboniferous. Jiamuhe Formation in northern Mahu Sag has natural gas generation ability. The deep-seated structural-lithologic traps of Jiamuhe Formation or Carboniferous which source and reservoir in the sane bed or young source in old reservoir contain good potential in exploration of natural gas.
